The Columbus Crew have an opportunity to go to their first ever MLS Cup. However, in order to reach the Cup Championship they must defeat the only team in MLS they have yet to beat all season. Although Columbus had the best record in MLS and this is their 5th time reaching the Eastern Conference finals. They still must prove they can win the big game when it counts.

The Conference final game between Columbus and Chicago sure lived up to expectations. It was a gritty battle from start to finish. There was absolute pandemonium in the stadium and the awesome fireworks display during pregame seemed to energize the crowd. Along with the normal cheers from the home fans, their additional stomping, yelling, and clapping made it impossible to hear yourself think.
As the game began there seemed to be no love lost between both teams. It was a physical game with tempers flaring every minute and collisions occurring every second. The Crew’s defense chose to lay back & defend instead of applying pressure on Chicago . This defensive strategy proved to be a tactic which cost them as they trailed 0 – 1 during the 1st half. Chicago answered early as the Fire opened the scoring on a header from Brian McBride in the 29th minute. Even though trailing, the Crew had several opportunities in the 1st half but just could not convert.

The Crew responded quickly with 3:00 into the 2nd half. Chad Marshall answered the bell and put the Crew on his back as he evened up the score. Eddie “The Gun” Gavin soon followed suit as he scored a blast in the 55th minute to snap a tie game and put Columbus ahead in the 2nd half. The Crew scored 2 unanswered goals then turned up the heat and began playing like they had nothing to lose when they captured the lead. The Fire held tight, kept fighting to the end and had several chances to tie the game with time winding down. The Crew goal keeper William Hesmer saved the day again as he made two miraculous saves during crunch time as he remained poised down the stretch. Columbus managed to stay strong and hold the lead until time expired.

Columbus has finally won that big game and has a chance to be crowned MLS Champions. They earned their first appearance to the MLS Cup match in California next week and will be considered larger than life if they can bring a Championship back to Columbus , Ohio .

The Crew will battle head to head with the New York Red Bulls and anything short of winning a Championship will be considered failing. Even though Columbus will be heavy favorites they still have a 1 – 2 record this season vs New York and will need to bring their A game to capture that MLS Championship.

As you’ve probably guessed by my name, I am not an expert in Somali cuisine. But as a former award-winning restaurant owner and reviewer, I do know something about food preparation, service, and décor. My delightful dining partner is Zahra Mire, who has agreed to accompany me to provide valuable input on traditional cuisine, and together we will visit the Somali restaurants of Columbus. Although the list continues to grow, we wanted begin our journey at the city’s best known restaurant—African Paradise.

Established in 1999 to serve Columbus’ growing African population, the restaurant offers a large selection of traditional dishes and reflects the influence of Middle Eastern and American cooking, too. From the outside, you would never guess what lies beneath a nondescript exterior in a strip mall storefront just east of the old Northland Mall. Recently remodeled and under new management, the restaurant is colorful, comfortable, and charming.

On this visit, Zahra’s teenage daughters, Hawa and Habiba joined us. They are big fans of the restaurant. Hawa had a very astute comment about African Paradise. She said that one of the things she liked about the restaurant was that on every visit, the food consistently tasted the same. This is no surprise—the head chef has been there for almost 8 years! A chef that has been at the same place for over 8 years is almost unheard of in the restaurant business.

We started with Paradise soup—a hearty potato and vegetable soup spiced with fresh cilantro that really warmed us on a cold day. For the main course we tried the grilled fish, grilled chicken strips, and roasted lamb. All arrived hot with lettuce and tomato on the side. The fish was flakey, moist, and lightly seasoned. The roasted lamb was a real treat; the chunks of tender meat, some pieces still on the bone (bones add depth to flavor), were excellent and my favorite dish of our lunch. Zahra’s favorite of the day was the grilled chicken strips. Strips of white meat, piled high on the plate, had a lovely rosy color on the outside from the delicate spices. Lunch comes with a choice of sides—spaghetti tossed with a light tomato sauce or a fantastically fragrant curried rice, made even more colorful with the addition of peas. The curried rice could be a meal by itself. I had the hot, black, sweetened, spiced tea to wash my lunch down. Delicious!

According to the new manager, Abdirahman Mohamed, there are some new dishes on the menu: ugali, mufo Paradise with beef, and chicken kabobs. Abdi and I both moved to Columbus from the northside of Chicago, found we had much in common, and enjoyed talking about the restaurant scene.

The service was pleasant and efficient. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the generous portion sizes. Lunch with three main courses and drinks for four came to $36.00. This is a place to recommend to family, friends, and acquaintances. If you have not been to African Paradise in a while, re-visit, you won’t be disappointed!
